Record-breaking year for Tokyo with 19.54 million visitors

    August 22, 2024

In a remarkable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, Tokyo welcomed a record-breaking 19.54 million international tourists in 2023, a sharp increase from previous years, as reported by the Tokyo metropolitan government. This surge represents a 28.7% increase compared to the 15.18 million visitors recorded in 2019, underscoring the city’s enduring appeal as a global tourism hub.

Record-breaking year for Tokyo with 19.54 million visitors

Visitor numbers were meticulously calculated by tracking entries at 735 tourism-related facilities and participation in 551 events across Tokyo. Further insights were gained through surveys conducted with 11,327 international visitors at 43 diverse locations within the city, providing a comprehensive overview of tourism patterns.

Financial contributions from these tourists have significantly bolstered the local economy, with spending reaching approximately ¥2.76 trillion ($19.2 billion), marking a 120% increase from ¥1.26 trillion ($8.7 billion) in 2019. This economic boost is partially attributed to the yen’s depreciation, which has made travel to Japan more cost-effective for international visitors.

The Tokyo metropolitan government, encouraged by these positive trends, has set an ambitious target of attracting over 30 million international tourists annually by 2030. This goal aligns with broader strategic efforts to enhance Tokyo’s global tourism profile and economic vitality through sustained investment in tourism infrastructure and promotional activities.

Officials believe that Tokyo’s diverse attractions, ranging from historic temples and bustling shopping districts to cutting-edge technology exhibits, continue to draw a wide array of tourists. The city’s ability to blend tradition with modernity remains a key factor in its popularity among international travelers.

The increase in tourism has not only revitalized local businesses but also enriched cultural exchanges, bringing a cosmopolitan flair to Tokyo’s already vibrant atmosphere. The ongoing improvements in travel facilities and tourist services are expected to further facilitate visitor experiences and satisfaction.

Looking ahead, Tokyo’s tourism sector appears poised for continued growth, driven by strategic initiatives and an ongoing commitment to providing a welcoming and enriching environment for international visitors. The metropolitan government’s forward-looking approach promises to keep Tokyo at the forefront of global tourism destinations well into the next decade.
